Joan Fugazzi      Statement of the Artist

As an undergraduate at Cornell University-New York City I visited ART USA 59 a hugely diverse show of American regional painting.  When an adolescent,  I had seen paintings in Italy but it was American art that fostered my decision to become an artist.   A native of Washington DC,  I received a scholarship and Master's degree in painting from American University.   During the 1960s,  The Washington Gallery of Modern Art provided local artists contact with artists of national reputation thus supporting a rich creative environment.   For example,  we staged a "Happening" with Claes Oldenberg.   Living in the San Francisco Bay area during the 1970s and 80s,   I followed the rhetoric of the Women's Art Movement.  The movement encouraged the use of personal history in the making of art.   I responded by focusing on my associations and feelings embedded in objects and constructed a series of autobiographical still lifes.

White Hawk Studio once located in the forest of Western North Carolina and now on the maritime coast of Western Washington is my place of work.   In both locations I explore a particular landscape vision,  one framed by human intervention and an intimate sense of place.   During my career, my paintings have been exhibited in six one-person shows,  fifteen groups shows of note,  and received two Museum prizes.   The poet Rafael Campo has chosen four of my paintings as cover art for his books of poetry.  Three publications include my work,  and my slides are in the Archives of Women Artists NMWA.  From 1996 to 2001 my work appeared online in the Varo Registry of Women Artists.
My painting medium is exclusively oil on canvas.
